Central Park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and architect Calvert Vaux. Central Park is a large public, urban park in the heart of New York and is host to nearly twenty-five million visitors each year. Central Park has been a National Historic Landmark since 1963. Central Park is bordered on the north by West 110th Street, on the south by West 59th Street (Central Park South Drive), on the west by Eighth Avenue on the east by Fifth Avenue.Central Park is 843 acres include 136 acres of woodlands, 250 acres of lawns, and 150 acres of water in 7 water bodies.

It is the first public park built in North America and it is completely man made. It took 15 years and over $14 million in those years to build the Park in accordance with Olmsted and Vauxí Greensward Plan. It contains 58 miles of pedestrian paths, 4.5 miles of bridle paths, 6.5 miles of park drives, and 7 miles of benches. Central Park also contains more than 26,000 trees, including 1,700 American Elm Trees. There are 51 sculptures in the park and 36 bridges and arches. Bethesda Fountain was the only sculpture included in the original design of the Parkóthe others were gifts.

The Dakota, at 72nd Street and Central Park West and one of New York’s first luxury apartment buildings, was also the location for the movie Rosemaryís Baby. This is where John Lennon lived with his wife Yoko Ono and son Sean when he was shot and killed in front of the building. The tear-drop shaped section of Central Park directly across from the Dakota is now known as Strawberry Fields.

The other remarkable points of the Central Park are Belvedere Castleóviewing pavilion overlooking the Croton Reservoir, Tavern on the Green- the famous restaurant not only in the park but also in the city, Carouselófirst built in 1871, Great Lawn, Strawberry Fieldsówas dedicated in honor of John Lennon, a tear drop shape memorial, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Reservoiróthe largest body water in Central Park.
